The day is not staged for the camera.
A documentary photographer works the room instead of directing it. The advantage is that the pictures are of your day rather than of an afternoon spent making pictures. The cost is real and worth stating: you will not get forty posed group shots, because the hours that would take are the hours the day is actually happening in.
The exception is the portrait window — one hour, built into the schedule, where the couple is directed properly. That hour is the only part of the day anybody is asked to do anything twice.

There is no published stills-only wedding price, and rather than invent one: if you want photography without a film, that is a conversation and a quote, not a number on a page. The two frames above are the couple in the last of the light and the rings, held — the same afternoon the film’s portrait sequence was shot.

Both frames are from the same wedding at Mahoney State Park in Ashland — the film cut from that day is on the wedding videography page, and the shoot is pinned on the field map.
The portrait window.
Every wedding photograph a couple frames and hangs comes out of this hour. It is worth scheduling properly, which means placing it against the light rather than against whatever gap the timeline has left — an hour before sunset does more for a portrait than three hours at midday, and no amount of editing recovers a noon sun.
Ashland in April meant bare trees, low sun and the river behind them. A July wedding at eight in the evening is a different hour and a different set of frames. This is the single planning decision that changes the gallery most, and it is worth settling before the invitations rather than on the day.

Engagement and couple sessions.
An hour with a camera before the wedding is how a couple finds out what they look like on one — and how the crew finds out what the two of you are like together, which is most of what makes the wedding day go quickly. It is the cheapest useful thing you can book before a wedding, and frequently the better place to start.
These carry no published price because the brief varies too much for one to be honest: a golden-hour hour in a park and a full session at a venue are not the same job. They are quoted against what you actually want. The point cost beside this is the retainer equivalent for a comparable stills pack, for reference only — a couple is not buying from the monthly menu.

Photography and film, from one booking.
Two companies on one wedding means two people competing for the same position at the same moment, and one of them is always in the other’s frame. Booking the stills and the film from one crew removes that entirely — and it is the reason the coverage engagement is quoted as one thing rather than as two line items that happen to share a date.
It also means the two match. Photographs graded one way and a film graded another are visibly two versions of one day, and a couple posting a still beside a clip is the moment that shows. Same crew, same grade, one delivery.
